This ethnic cape from Sol Alpaca is handwoven from 100% baby alpaca fiber. Spun on a traditional Andean hand loom, modeled on a design imported by the Spanish when they first arrived in Peru. The hand loom is just a recent iteration in what is a long line of weaving techniques practiced in the Andes, and contemporary weavers being the bearers of this rich and varied heritage.
Alpaca fibers are extremely fine, strong and resilient to many of life’s hardships, making them extremely valuable; only Incan royalty were permitted to wear alpaca prior to Spanish conquest, with the material being worth more than gold.
Sol Alpaca has been maintaining the rich and varied heritage of Andean weaving since 1931, specializing in the natural animal fibers that are unique to the area. Blending traditional knowledge of alpaca fiber processing with the latest technology, Sol Alpaca produce luxurious and unique products which take inspiration from Andean traditions and mix them with contemporary design.
Sol Alpaca is committed to the maintenance and development of Peru’s environmental, economical and cultural wealth, reinvesting in the rugged and hardy mountain environments in which alpaca live.
Alpaca fibers are unique in being exceedingly good at thermal insulation; flame retardant; water repellent and hypoallergenic. Being the product of a hardy animal indigenous to the Andes, alpaca fiber is more sustainable than either synthetic materials or wools that come from imported sheep. Alpaca fiber is also lighter than other natural materials, with an extremely high tensile strength.
An alpaca garment is a timeless statement piece, speaking of refinement and taste worthy of royalty.
