This stunning pot takes inspiration from those used in the Dancing Devils Festival held yearly during the Corpus Christi feast in Venezuela’s coastal regions. Hand shaped and painted, this piece is part of a collection made by the Caraquena de Chuao workshop in Caracas – perfect for housing plants on a sideboard or table.

This collection of masks and pots come from Justine – a designer, social communicator and ceramicist who has done extensive work with the Chuao culture of Venezuela. The pieces take inspiration from the poignant Dancing Devils festivities, where there is extensive feasting and a fascinating exploration of local relations between the sacred and the profane. During the festivities groups of men and boys wear evocative devil masks whilst dancing backwards in penitence, making way for a local priest bearing the Blessed Sacrament. Musical accompaniment is provided by indigenous string and percussion instruments, whilst all attendees carry maracas with which they ward off evil spirits. As the celebrations come to their climax the dancing devils surrender to the priest and his sacrament, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The masks used are unique, designed by each confraternity and carrying generations of history and cultural significance within them.

Pieces unique. You may expect some variations.
