This Charcoal Vase with Lines is formed using the traditional method of stacking hand-rolled bands of clay into a cylinder, before shaping with rounded stones, scrapers made from gourds and other found objects. The finish of the piece recalls the Latin American mid-twentieth century fascination with geometric patterns and organic colors, providing a touch of retro class in the timeless form of contemporary design.
The interior of the piece is finished in a glossy, non-porous obsidian glaze, making it ideal to hold cut flowers.

Charcoal and Cream
This gorgeous Charcoal Vase with Lines was handmade by Daniel Reynolds in his South London studio. Daniel takes inspiration from his local environment and melds it with influences from his native Venezuela. He perfects each piece on a wheel using smoothed stones and a scraper fashioned from a gourd. Traditional potters perfected this technique in rural Venezuela, where tools must be made from locally available materials. Daniel’s geometric patterns and organic colors are likewise inspired by his love of mid-century modern Latin design. He repurposes this uniquely Latin American style to create his contemporary pieces, like this vase. As a result, the timeless forms of his pieces boast a touch of retro.
Daniel likes to use stoneware because of its durability and versatility as a material. Due to this, they are perfect for everyday use. He decorates his pieces when the clay is ‘leather hard’, scoring them with specific tools. He then pigments them with colored slip – a form of liquid clay. Finally, he glazes the interior of the pieces. As a result, they are watertight but keep their rough exterior.
Reynolds spent his formative years in Caracas and draws on this in his work. He grew up surrounded by architecture ranging from modernist and post-Bauhaus to Colonial. Through this, he learned about the different languages of design. He recalls houses filled with Scandinavian furniture, carefully curated geometric and cubist art and tropical plants all around. This is, in short, what we consider high design today. While most of this was lost in the following decades, Daniel treasured his memories. He now uses them to inform his creativity.
