The female artisans of the Yawalapiti tribe, indigenous to the Brazilian Amazon, are renowned for the traditional weaving techniques they use in their hammock-making practices. Some are created from the fibers of the buriche palm, which grows wild in the Xingu region, whilst others are made from soft, supple cotton. The latter are highly prized locally and reserved for chiefs.

Incausa works tirelessly to financially support, preserve and empower tribes indigenous to the Brazilian Amazon through showcasing their unique traditional production techniques. Vinicius Vieira de Vieira, the company’s founder, encountered Yawalapiti crafts for the first time on a sourcing trip in 2015, which has led to their work being featured by Incausa for the first time.

This Cotton Hammock is handmade by members of the Amazonian Yawalapiti Tribe for Incausa. The Yawalapiti were first contacted by non-indigenous explorers in 1887. Whilst communications have been maintained since then, it is only recently that Yawalapiti craft products have become available. In Yawalapiti culture hammocks are central to life, and considered celestial objects. The legend goes that the first hammock was made by the tribe’s ‘creator’, Mayutsinin. To lie in a Yawalapiti hammock is, thus, an embrace from their god.

Incausa is a nonprofit organization that promotes products made by indigenous Amazonian cultures. They do this to raise awareness of the culture, provide an ongoing livelihood for the makers and empower their communities. There are many rich and diverse craft traditions practiced by indigenous Amazonian tribes. Incausa is passionate about educating the wider world about them. Furthermore, they invest profits into local development projects that help the communities, and help build sustainable and fair-trade wholesale networks for them.

The hammock’s rich cultural history, alongside the traditional skill involved in making it, will distinguish any home its in. Whether it’s in your living room, your garden or in the woods on a trip, this hammock is a must for any culturally curious household.
