Maria Eugenia and Eduardo are the artists behind the Venezuelan Morera Workshop – named after the tree which feeds the silkworm they get their thread from. Using five manual looms and one digital one, their enterprise is not merely a creative one but also epistemic – they are notable researchers into the weaving potentialities of materials such as cotton, wool, silk, copper fibers and plant matters. Melding a creative impulse with a natural curiosity, their experimental approach to production extends into dyeing, where they try established and novel means to achieve the best colours. Red and pink hues come from cochineal beetles and Anoto seeds, whilst are achieved with the extract of anil leaves.
UNESCO has recognized the couple for their contribution to Creativity in Design and Weaving in Silk. The boundless enterprise of the Morero Workshop shows in their pieces, which speak volumes of the dedicated and attributions of the creators. These objects are modern classics: the tokens of extensive research and signifiers of the creation of knowledge.
