The Spring Oven
The Honey Spring Ovenware is a beautiful and inventive pot designed to transform home baking. Bread is a central part of cuisines across cultures, and is arguably one of the most important foods ever. Despite this long and diverse history, baking the perfect loaf is not a simple thing. Domestic oven designers create their appliances for multiple cooking functions, which makes them imperfect for baking bread.
The Spring Oven addresses this issue by using the missing piece to the perfect loaf puzzle: steam. Steam helps dough rise and gives great crust when baking bread, but is hard to use in a conventional oven. Many home methods to create steam yield minimal results and cool the oven in the process. As a result, the bread fails to rise. The Spring Oven provides a solution to this problem, suitable for any modern home.
The ovenware pot features a water channel at the base which generates steam inside the piece as the bread bakes. This combines the benefits of high steam-baking while allowing the oven it’s in to reach high temperatures, for the perfect loaf. Ingenious, simple and beautiful, the Spring Oven Pot will look great in any kitchen as well.
UK-based artisans handcraft each piece from slip cast terracotta, which both radiates heat and adds flavor to the bread. These earthy tones and simple lines hint towards the North African roots of the design’s inspiration. Moroccans and Algerians have long used tajine pots to cook delicious dishes with minimal water. Their moisture-conserving design is essential to life in such arid climates. The Spring Oven takes this classic shape, which redirects condensation and retains high humidity, and repurposes it for modern homes.
The Spring Oven started in London as a university project exploring healthy eating. The designers first exhibited the prototype and booklet at the New Designers 2014 show and won commendation from the Design Council. Whilst they’ve tweaked the design since then, the key features – water channel, material and shape – have remained the same. On July 28th they completed a kickstarter campaign and successfully secured funding for production. Blending form and functionality, the Spring Oven is the perfect addition to any kitchen.
