Infuse your home with some tasteful foreign flavor with this beautiful large Talavera pottery vase from Mexican Artisans.

Spanish guild artisans introduced Mexico to Talavera during the colonial period. Mexican Talavera Pottery draws its name from the 16th century Spanish pottery center, Talavera de la Reina. This is where imagination and persistence led to enormous strides in the world’s knowledge of fine ceramics. The intricate polychrome and more typical blue and white designs portray their old world legacy. However, the indigenous floral and celestial motifs featured on these pages characterize the ceramics as classically Mexican.

Authentic Talavera pottery mainly comes from the places where the craft’s history and the clay needed are both centered. These locations include Talavera de la Reina in Spain; San Pablo del Monte in Tlaxcala, Mexico; and several Mexican cities. Artisans hand throw all of the pieces on a potter’s wheel. The glazes contain tin and lead, as they have since colonial times. This glaze must craze, be slightly porous and milky-white, but not pure white. There are only six permitted colors, which must be made from natural pigments: blue, yellow, black, green, orange, and mauve. The painted designs have a blurred appearance as they fuse slightly into the glaze. The base (the part that touches the table) is not glazed but exposes the terracotta underneath. Finally, the required inscription on the bottom contains the manufacturer’s logo, the artist’s initials, and the manufacturer’s location in Puebla.

The design of the pieces is highly regulated by tradition. The elaborate process to create Talavera pottery hasn’t changed since the early colonial period when the craft was introduced. The paint ends up slightly raised over the base. In the early days, only cobalt blue was used, as this was the most expensive pigment available. Moreover, cobalt blue made the pieces highly sought after for their prestige and ensured the quality of the entire piece.

To make this large Talavera pottery vase the artisans only use natural, rather than chemically treated and dyed, clays; the handcrafting process takes three to four months. The process is risky because a piece can break at any point. For these reasons, Talavera is three times more costly than other types of pottery. Today, only pieces made by designated areas and in certified workshops are permitted to call their work “Talavera”. Shop this unique handmade homeware at Maison Numen.
