LINEN BABY SET
This set of delicate linen baby food cloths – consisting of a bib, envelope and napkin all decorated with fine hemstitching and fringing – continues a rich tradition of Umbrian textiles dating back to 1908. Crafted from a proprietary blend of linen from Ireland and Flanders and spun by talented weavers, this product from Tela Umbra embodies grace, heritage and taste.
Founded in 1908 by Baroness Alice Hallgarten and her husband Leopoldo Franchetti, the Tela Umbra Laboratory has been maintaining traditional handcrafting techniques ever since. Alice Hallgarten Franchetti, an enterprising American, was so moved by the accounts of hardship and destitution of Italian weavers that she worked to create an environment in which they could practice their craft without the exploitation and marginalization that they had previously suffered.
Tela Umbra was a beacon of fair trade, long before the term was coined, and continues to be a leader in both craft maintenance and artisanal support. Baroness Hallgarten’s close friendship with Maria Montessori – the celebrated pedagog – played a significant part in making Tela Umbra not only an artisanal workshop, but a learning centre for traditional craft.
