MOROCCAN SAFI RED PLATTER I
This platter comes from Fez one of the Morrocan centres which specialises in producing this elaborate and intricate cobalt blue and white pottery, with its distinctive floral and geometric designs. This city is widely hailed as the home of Moroccan culture and boasts a rich range of ceramics, with the distinctive cobalt hues of the Bleu de Fès style.
Safi is a city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco famous for its fishermen, ceramicists and the surfers who gravitate to its sandy beaches. It remains a little known destination for tourists – despite being recognized by Moroccans as one of the capitals of the country’s vibrant ceramics scene, and being the site of the first ceramics school in Africa. Today much of the ceramics in the city is concentrated in the purpose built Colline des Potiers, where there are over 140 individual workshops employing more than 20,000 artisans. With so many cultural practices and traditional techniques being used and passed on in one area, Safi’s ceramics quarter is a truly unique place and one of the unseen gems of North Africa.
