MOROCCAN SAFI RED SALAD BOWL

The distinctive ceramics of Safi are characterized by the use of highly calcific local clay, rich in iron oxide. This unique material is mixed with water, wood and a selection of chemical compounds to create the uniquely gorgeous pieces for which the city in known.

After each piece is hand thrown, it is left to dry before a coat of kaolin-based varnish is applied, giving it the creamy sheen of porcelain. The piece is once again left to dry before firing, with the subsequent cooling period lasting up to two days. Fired and cooled pieces are then decorated by hand, each artisan using their brush to create their own signature symmetrical designs.

Safi is a city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco famous for its fishermen, ceramicists and the surfers who gravitate to its sandy beaches. It remains a little known destination for tourists – despite being recognized by Moroccans as one of the capitals of the country’s vibrant ceramics scene, and being the site of the first ceramics school in Africa. Today much of the ceramics in the city is concentrated in the purpose built Colline des Potiers, where there are over 140 individual workshops employing more than 20,000 artisans. With so many cultural practices and traditional techniques being used and passed on in one area, Safi’s ceramics quarter is a truly unique place and one of the unseen gems of North Africa.
