PASCUALA PILLOW COVER
This 100% cotton cushion has been handcrafted by artisans from Santa Martha, in the Southwestern Mexican state of Chiapas. The brocade finish is embroidered by hand following traditional techniques that have been practiced in the highlands of Chiapas for generations, with distinct styles differentiating different municipalities within the region. Brocade is perceived not simply as an art form, but also as a sacred duty ordained by gods and perfected by ancestors.
For centuries women in Chiapas have woven tunics, locally known as ‘huipiles’, with intricately brocaded designs that narrate aspects of the culture’s cosmology. Diamond forms signify the earth and sky, whilst undulating lines refer to the fertile soil and the abundance of holy plants and animals it sustains. Patterns with three vertical lines, meanwhile, refer to ancestors.
