This set of six place mats from Libertejidos is handwoven from plantain fiber – a material harvested from the stem of a comestible plant which is widely used in producing crafts, packaging and kitchen utensils. The fibers are processed through a traditional cleaning and drying process which lasts close to a month.
The municipality of San Agustin in Colombia is widely known for its rich archeological diversity, lush landscapes and aromatic coffee. New grassroots initiatives have introduced sustainable ecological development projects, adopting traditional methods of curing and utilizing plantain fibers in the creation of local crafts. This not only ensures maximization of the plant’s resources, but also results in a range of wonderful and culturally valuable pieces that can be enjoyed the world over.
