POM POM STRIPED WOOL PILLOW COVER
This 100% cotton cushion has been crafted by artisans from Chamula, in the Southwestern Mexican state of Chiapas. The piece is woven on a backstrap loom, a method that has been widely used throughout Central America since pre-Colombian times. The weaver works sitting on the floor or a bench, pulling a bar to and from her stomach. It is due to this that a weaver is often seen as 'giving birth to her fabric.
The backstrap loom has been used throughout Central America since pre-Colombian times, a technique perfected through generations of practice. Much smaller and simpler than larger European looms and consisting mainly of strings, sticks and a strap adjusted to the waist of the weaver – hence the name – the backstrap loom takes a great deal of skill and deftness to operate. In use, one end of the loom is tied to a tree or pole whilst the weaver maintains tension with the other, building up the fabric from their waist outward.
