This rug has been handwoven by Idanela Martin on a horizontal loom with 100% cotton. Her inspiration on this rug come from the electronic board of Boeing Planes. Based in Merida in the Venezuelan Andes, Idanela’s Arte Textile Workshop has been a hub of experimentation and production for diverse techniques, threads and fibers for over three decades.
These rugs draw upon the weaving traditions of the Tuareg, Saharan nomads, who weave when they set up camp by using their tents as an anchoring point.
Idanela Martin has enjoyed a long and widely acclaimed career in fabric arts, with international exhibitions, worldwide recognition, a National Textile Work award and UNESCO recognition – to note but a few accolades.
From her workshop Arte Textile, located in the gorgeous town of Merida in the Venezuelan Andes, Idanela has explored many of the world’s diverse weaving practices, with the help of her assistants Victor and Yelitza.
From indigenous Amazonian to Saharan nomad, Idanela melds her own artistic flair with varying traditions to create truly unique pieces. Idanela’s work maintains a dialogue between nature and culture, exploring the relations between humans and the world around.
In her own words: “We came to this world to weave: weave tapestries of thought; of poetry; of peace”.
