The Mayan Store was founded by Diego Olivero and Gonzalo Pertiles, who began by working alongside thirty artisans to produce a collection of bespoke rugs. The company now enjoys collaboration with over five hundred artisans, principally from Momostenango and Totonicapan, located in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Located 2204 meters above sea level, the communities are well known for the production of wool covers and ponchos.
The Mayan Store also works alongside the governmental organization Cero Hunger, which promotes local craft production in deprived communities, as a means to end extreme poverty and malnutrition. Each of their pieces carries with it the story of both a traditional, indigenous heritage and the contemporary Guatemala it has formed.
