This square indigo pillow cover is handmade by Morera, in the heart of Venezuela. Artists Maria Eugenia and Eduardo founded the workshop, naming it after the Mulberry tree. To clarify, it is the fruit of this tree that feeds the silkworm they get their dazzling thread from. They then process this delicate material using five manual looms and one digital one. In this way, as in many others, their practice strikes a balance between modern technology and traditional techniques.
Blessed with a natural curiosity, Maria Eugenia and Eduardo are constantly researching materials. Due to this, they approach their practice with extensive expertise and knowledge. Whether they’re using silk, cotton, wool, copper fibers or plant flax, they always have an intimate understanding of the material’s properties. They combine this academic approach with an appetite for traditional practices and innovative experimentation. This is notable in their approach to dyeing materials, where they are both maintaining ancient practices and creating new ones. Not content with ready made dyes, Maria Eugenia and Eduardo create their own. The deep red and flushed pink hues in their pieces, for example, come from cochineal beetles and anoto seeds, respectively.
Morera’s work has not gone unnoticed, with UNESCO awarding the team recognition for its contribution to Creativity in Design and Weaving in Silk. One look at a Morera piece is evidence of how well deserved this award is. Wherever you place them, these gems of contemporary designs are unique additions to your home.
