The exquisite India piece is part of Utopia & Utility’s triptych Stacking Vessels collection. Three unique containers of distinct designs and materials stack together to form a larger vessel; a sculptural whole which accentuates the individuality of its parts.
India combines three distinct European craft processes in one: delicately blown glass; carefully crafted wood and expertly moulded copper. The glass comes from Bohemia in the Czech Republic, a region with a rich and long history of mold blown glass of the utmost quality.
The wood is sourced from a retired Finnish farmer with a passion for nature, who fells the forest around his house every January and dries the logs for two years before shaping them by hand. He incorporates the bark of the wood into his work, giving it a natural feel. The copper is worked from solid sheets in a family-run workshop in Leytonstone, London, being moulded over a form by hand then expertly finished for a clean and matt surface.
Founded by siblings Pia and Moritz Wüstenberg in 2012, Utopia & Utility’s philosophy revolves around combining traditionally crafted materials in innovative ways to change conventional perceptions. Crafts are at the heart of everything they do, working closely with a variety of European artisans to develop and produce their pieces and bring new life to historic practices.
To maintain a beautiful surface the Wood should be dusted and oiled from time to time. Frequent handling can leave uneven fingerprints or marks and for this we recommend an ordinary household copper/brass polish, Brasso for instance -follow the manufacturer’s instructions and always use a soft cotton cloth to polish and clean your copper/bras.
