This Talavera Pottery set comes from the talented ceramicist Ana Gomez. It is a playful yet poignant look at the relationship between contemporary consumerism and cultural heritage. The combination of iconic modern forms and traditional Talavera pottery ensures that this set will stand out in any home.

Ana investigates contemporary cultural issues through her craft. She references mass culture, everyday objects and the trappings of a globalizing world, and contrasts them with the hallmarks of tradition. In this set, she explores the impact that modern eating practices have had on Mexico, its crafts and its future. As a result, it is an engaging visual discourse about tradition and modernity.

Historically, meals were enjoyed on handmade tableware, and were an opportunity for families to bond and grow. However, in recent decades, Mexico’s fast food culture has grown huge. Because of this, meals have changed dramatically. What was once a soulful, domestic ritual is now a fleeting public event. Moreover, the disposable packaging of modern fast food has replaced the fine ceramics Mexico is famous for. By recreating throw away items in fine, handmade ceramic, Ana’s work raises important questions about the contemporary world.

Ana currently focuses on her work and on AG Estudio, a design studio which explores issues through experimenting with ceramics. She also gives lectures about her work, and is a consultant on art, design and ceramics projects.

I’m a sucker for statement decor pieces and this is one of my new favorites, also I loved the fast food reference. I placed the pieces in my bathroom and put some tissue paper in the soda container, soap in the burger box and toothbrushes in the french fry container.
