TAMEGROUTE GLAZED CANDLE HOLDERS SET
$280.00 | 2 pieces |
These handcrafted candle holders come from the Southern Moroccan village of Tamgroute (or Tamegroute), where skilled potters practice local techniques that have been passed down through generations. The distinctive green glazes, ranging from earthy olives to rich pines, are the result of variations in a carefully calibrated traditional mixture of magnesium, copper oxide and barley flour.
With their unique forms, vibrant colors and the heavily grained glaze, these pieces strike a perfect balance between art and design; the embodiment of a unique and long-lived craft which is still going strong.
The Southern Moroccan village of Tamgroute has historically served as a centre for learning and creating, being home to both a widely celebrated ceramics scene and a Sufi order of great significance in the Islamic world. Since the 16th century the village has played host to a large number of workshops, where traditional pottery techniques have been practiced, perfected and passed down through the generations.
Tamgroute clay comes from particular caves around the village and is prepared for use by being delicately kneaded underfoot. Once pieces have been shaped they are put out under the baking African sun to dry, before being covered in the uniquely vibrant glazes for which Tamegroute is renowned. Traditional stone ovens are used for the firing process, with particular mixtures of grasses, dried palm fronds and wood being burnt to ensure that a dense, dark smoke is produced.
Any sign of scratch in the surface or imperfections in the construction of these pottery should be seen not as flaws, but rather as testament to the artisanal production methods and unique nature of each piece.
