TELAR PLAYA PILLOW COVER
This cushion from the Costa Chica in Oaxaca was woven in a pedal loom by male artisans, before a traditional Zapotecan brocade border was embroidered by their female counterparts.
Pedal looms, imported by the first generations of Spanish settlers, are manually operated machines and are thus more demanding than their mechanical equivalents. This fact has contributed to their being primarily the preserve of men, unlike in many other cultures. Whilst requiring more energy to operate, pedal looms allow for the weaving of larger pieces than the widespread alternative, the backstrap loom. Due to this, they are largely used to weave tablecloths, bed covers, rugs and curtains.
