Ikuko Iwamoto was trained in traditional Japanese pottery and porcelain manufacture in Nara, Japan, but was not content with the monotony of producing the same forms day in day out. Her creative drive draws upon this classical training and the rich, extensive culture of Japanese porcelain, which she melds with her own explorations of nature and the everyday.
In her own words, Ikuko makes “exquisite cups and other objects for a bizarre tea ceremony. They suggest the everyday, the ordinary, but are in fact extra-ordinary… [Exploring] a world of intricacy and detail, of mathematical pattern and organic chaos.”
It is this interplay between the cultural and natural, the refined and the organic, which distinguishes Iwamoto’s delightful work.
