BLACK AND WHITE STRIPED PILLOW COVER
This Lalo Collection cushion in bold tasteful black and white comes from Zipolite on the Costa Chica in Oaxaca. It is made on a pedal loom from 100% cotton, with traditional Zapotecan brocades adorning it.
The pedal loom requires more strength to operate, as the thread has to be pulled from one side to the other, therefore it is usually operated by men. It allows weaving larger pieces than the backstrap loom; therefore it is used to weave tablecloths, bed covers and curtains.
Pedal looms imported by the first generations of Spanish settlers, are manually operated machines and are thus more demanding than their mechanical equivalents. This fact has contributed to their being primarily the preserve of men, unlike in many other cultures. Whilst requiring more energy to operate, pedal looms allow for the weaving of larger pieces than the widespread alternative, the bakcstrap loom. Due to this, they are largely used to weave tablecloths, bed covers, rugs and curtains.
