The First evidence of crochet in History was in early nineteenth-century Europe. Shepherd’s knitting was its original name, and its purpose was to be a cheap substitute for traditional lace. For this reason, Crochet struggled to shake off this reputation as an inferior craft. That changed, however, when Queen Victoria gave it the royal seal of approval by buying crocheted lace made by Irish women who were struggling to make a living after the potato famine. The queen herself even learned how to crochet, making eight crocheted scarves for veterans of the South African War. When her reign ended, the practice of the technique had already spread throughout much of England and, afterward, around the rest of Europe including Florence, Italy.
The Crochet technique has never really gone away, and today it is having a bit of a renaissance. Haute Couture brands have a regular feature of Crochet on the catwalk. Florian artisans adapted this ancient technique into contemporary placemat set designs, using high-quality cotton yarns and colors on trends.
Crocheting has been threaded throughout the past two centuries, as a source of financial support, pleasure, and artistic expression. From the 1800s’ Irish lace to 21st-century tablet cases, crochet has been here through it all. So with this placemat set, know you’re in good company not just with all of us today, but with the many men and women of the past who have enriched the world through this wonderful fiber art.
Margherita Marzot‘s pieces are unique due to their artisanal nature as they are entirely handmade and hand-decorated. For this reason, the piece you receive at home may be dissimilar in some minor aspect from what you see in the picture. At the end of the day, these subtle differences make each one of these products an object with meaning.
The artisan takes one (1) to two (2) weeks to prepare this piece. Once the designer has completed the development of your product, you will receive an email confirming that your purchase is on the way. This email will include a tracking number that allows you to verify the status of your order.
