Stonework is a tradition that dates back to pre-colonial times. Artisans transformed a vast array of stones—including volcanic rock, obsidian, jade, and onyx—into idols and temple reliefs.
The Spaniards’ arrival in Mexico brought new tools and technologies that facilitated the art of stone carving. As a result, artisans later applied more elaborate relief work to church facades, government buildings, and private residences.
Artisans living in Tecalli, Puebla hand carved all of Maison Numen’s line of volcanic stone products. Tecalli is a historically significant center for stone carving (tecalli means “stone” in the Nahuatl language). Also, it is located in a region that is rich in volcanic stone, onyx, and certain types of marble.
