Artisan-made, a soulful label

Discover what artisan-made means chez nous!

From a fancy Italian glass vase to a textured pillow that recalls Peruvian landscapes, all our pieces are artisan made. But what does it mean?

To understand what “artisan made” means, we must define what it means to be an artisan.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines artisan in two ways:

  1. A worker who practices a trade or handicraft
  2. A person or company that produces something in limited quantities, often using traditional methods

In Maison Numen, we call our artisans “makers” who make possible that these unique home décor accessories come to life.

Our “Numen Makers” are more than handcraft creators. They infuse a personal touch or cultural significance into the object they make. For that reason, you can tell you’re seeing a visual representation of Mexican colonial history when you have a Talavera Pottery in front of you, for example.

What makes an artisan-made object so special?

Artisan-made pieces tell the story of the people who make them.

In Maison Numen, we are not only concerned with the quality of the object but also with the transparency of its production. That moves us to curate the most soulful pieces; objects with vitality, a rich past, and a long future ahead, created by real people from across the globe.

Why should you go for artisan-made products?

When you buy artisan-made, you are contributing to preserving the artistic heritage behind that piece. We are talking about the traditions (history) and skilled work (know-how) of the creators of every object. That’s why we travel across the world looking for highly skilled makers and innovative designers who preserve their cultural identity and adapt it to contemporary life.

On the other hand, often, artisan-made objects are created in small businesses placed in local communities. For that reason, the development of these businesses impacts positively on the town’s economy, creating jobs for families.

So yes, when you go for an artisan-made home decor piece, you are celebrating life by giving chances to others to tell their stories, and you are investing in culture in one of its more pure forms: art made by human hands.

“At Maison Numen we want to find connections. What connects us with tradition, with culture, with our own human nature”

Jessica Macias
