What comes to mind when you think of Mexico? This is our top 3:
1.Spicy and delicious
2. Great places to discover: from museums to natural destinations
3. Artisanal pieces with a unique aesthetic
You know why that is, right? Mexico has an exceptional national brand, and what it promises, it delivers. And oh boy, does it deliver. Its culture embraces every single aspect of its rich. That is to say, ancient civilization mixed with strong European influences, something that you can see in its handcrafted products.
Talavera Pottery is the best example of how the “handmade in Mexico” label has become extremely powerful in the delivery of high quality products that become a vehicle to export its rich culture and heritage to the rest of the world. In 2019 it was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, under the official name of “Talavera style ceramic artisanal manufacturing in Puebla”.
In 2017 we had the opportunity to visit Uriarte Talavera, a workshop that has been producing Talavera pottery since 1824; there, we realized the meaningful gift Mexico is giving to the world by carrying traditional techniques with the imaginary of Puebla; above all, transforming them into arty, contemporary pieces.
Local workforce and sustainable fabrication processes are some of the elements that enrich the “Handmade in Mexico” quality label. Pottery from Oaxaca, “Barro Negro” from Mexico City, Mayan weaving from Chiapas… Each technique tells a cosmological story that has been passed down through generations. In other words, they will give the accent décor that every well-traveled home should have.
Next time you visit Mexico, make sure you come back with a “handmade in Mexico” souvenir. And if there’s no traveling for you in the near future, here are some of our favorite pieces, that will make you feel like you have “Mexico en la piel”.
