Even the minimalist needs a little newness every now and then. That’s when true sustainable, durable, handmade goods come in!
Who can name the three pillars of sustainable shopping? Anyone? Don’t fret, we’re not about to put you on the spot so fast. Let us step in: in order to make your home shopping sustainable you need to keep these things in mind: How were these pieces made, under what conditions, by whom? With mass produced goods, there’s usually so much you can really know about the person who made them. Their name. Their history. What did their ancestors do?
Then you have techniques and materials, are these harmful to the environment? Are they repurposing materials that are no longer needed? Are they making the best they can with what is already out there?
And finally, how much back and forth does this piece have to do to get to you? How many stamps does its fictional passport have?
We care about our products being meaningful, and considerate. Considerate to everyone. We get to know the artisans behind them, to make sure they’re real people that care about what they are putting out in the world. We get very excited when we learn that they are repurposing old wine bottles to make cups or old disposable clay to make an entire set of modern looking dinnerware (thanks, Costa Nova!).
And the reason why our products at Maison Numen mostly ship from artisan to your home, and they rarely make it to our distribution centers, is because we want to reduce their carbon footprint to the absolute minimum. Now isn’t that nice?
