Taking inspiration from Alchemy and Sacred Geometry, this rug is part of Bi Yuu’s 2016 collection. Handwoven by Zapotecan artisans from Oaxaca with a blend of 70% Lincoln Wool and 30% Merino Wool, these pieces have 2800 threads per meter squared. Natural pigments are used to render a pattern, designed by Marisol Centeno, which uses spatial arrangement and color to explore geometrical relations and their connection to mysticism.
Just as the alchemical process is predicated on the exacting selection of particular materials, so do Bi Yuu’s latest pieces rely on a carefully calculated blend of wools to achieve the optimum fabric. Drawing upon the extensive knowledge of the Zapotecan artisans who form part of Bi Yuu’s team, these pieces are testament to the rich heritage and cross-cultural dialogue that both Mexico and wider Latin America enjoy.
The dimensional designs, created by Marisol Centeno, explores the folkloric relation between spirit and matter through dialogues in space: the indigenous traditions of Zapotecans provide inspiration alongside the ancient arts of alchemy and sacred geometry. These pieces are the very contemporary multicultural, multidisciplinary products of a melding of distinct and rich traditions, with a result which is both poignant and timeless.
Care should be taken to not use excessive products when cleaning these woolen pieces, as frequent laundering and excessive treatment can have negative effects upon the longevity of the product. Should any threads come loose, it is best to cut them at the protruding base, rather than pull on them. The product can be dry cleaned and machine washed at 30 °C, although a specialist launderer is recommended.
