Melding ancient craft with contemporary taste, these three brass lamps are the result one young designer’s desire to renew and reimagine Indian tradition for the modern world. Nivida Malhotra learned the process of Dhokra, or lost wax casting, from the skilled artisans amongst whom the process has been passed down for four millennia, from the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. These lamps are handmade, making each as unique as the ancient figures unearthed in the ruins of the Indus Valley, a true piece of living culture which carries within it 4,000 years of tradition.

The Lotus Pod Brass Lamp is a lamp that brings this country´s rich culture straight to your livingroom. Artisans practiced the ancient process of lost wax casting in India for 4,000 years to create beautiful metal objects. Nivida Malhotra, a native designer from the state of Chhattisgarh, has collaborated with traditionally trained Dhokra artisans. Therefore, produces stunning contemporary pieces through the richly historic process. Nivida’s pod collection takes inspiration from the emblematic pod of the lotus flower, native to the region.

Much like the lotus grows from muddy ponds to bloom into a magnificent specimen. The craft of Dhokra also begins with mud, before blossoming into something altogether more spectacular. A group of Dhokra artisans taught Nivida the techniques that passed down through generations.

The young Indian designer makes these lamps with a level of creativity and innovation that transcends academic rigor and demonstrates her talents. Consequently blending a process steeped in cultural history with her unique aesthetic taste; thus creating brass pieces which both spread awareness of this historic craft and liven up any home.

One of the earliest known lost wax artefacts is the dancing girl of Mohenjo-daro. The product of dhokra artisans are in great demand in domestic and foreign markets because of primitive simplicity, enchanting folk motifs and forceful form. The lost wax technique for casting of copper based alloys has also been found in China, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria, Central America, and other places.
