White Woman Head Vase
$570.00|Made in Italy
The White Woman Head vase is a typical sight on Sicilian balconies, and are said to trace their origins back millennia to the times when Arabs ruled the island. Part of the Traditional Ceramic Collection, this head vase exemplifies the genius Giacomo Alessi’s work, reinterpreting local myths and styles through modern tastes, whilst maintaining traditional techniques.
The legend goes that a beautiful girl in Palermo caught the eye of a handsome Moorish occupier, who vowed to make her his. The blossoming affair between them was cut short when the Sicilian girl found out her lover had a wife and child waiting for him back in his native land. In her rage and sorrow, she beheaded the Moor and used his severed head to grow plants on her balcony. Watered by her heartbroken tears and fed by the remains of her lover, the plants grew spectacularly in the Sicilian sun – so much so that her neighbors, being envious of such abundance, began creating their own pots fashioned after Moorish heads, without ever knowing the tragic reason for her odd choice of vessel.
Handmade in accordance with local traditions, each piece is unique and individual, with slight derivations from what is shown in the images. This is part of what makes Ceramiche Alessi’s pieces so special and inimitable.
This White Woman Head Vase is a rustic piece that will give to your home decor an Italian breeze.
The Alessi family produces some of Italy’s most celebrated ceramics, with their handmade work winning prizes around the world. Giacomo Alessi oversees their Sicilian workshop, with his skilled hands and artistic genius continuing to define the brand. The only machinery Alessi uses is the simple lathe – relying instead on the wealth of traditional handcrafting processes Italy offers.
The lack of mechanization means each and every Ceramiche Alessi piece is unique and individual, with its own handmade quirks. Once formed, artisans fire Alessi pieces two or three times, adding glaze at the perfect point. This gives each piece stunning looks, superb longevity and a brilliant balance between aesthetics and utility.
Since 1978, Giacomo Alessi has been developing and refining his craft through rigorous technical exploration, artisanal expertise, and extensive research. Woven into his work are deep, introspective investigations into the history of the craft and culture of his native Sicily. The resulting pieces are famous for reinterpreting local traditions, myths, forms and designs in unique, innovative and contemporary ways. His work transcends the dichotomy of form and function, becoming art in its own right whilst retaining versatility and usefulness.
Featured in UNESCO’s book of Living Human Treasures of Sicily, Alessi has exhibited at the world’s foremost ceramics shows. Venues and prizes include Palermo’s Salinas Museum, Pescara’s 57th Michetti Prize, the Milan Fuorisalone and the 54th Venice Biennale. Alessi also featured alongside that of masters such as Guttuso, Mastroianni, Greco, Cagli, and Manzu in the 2011 “Roman Ceramics and Lazio” exhibition in Rome.
Despite this celebrity, Giacomo Alessi spends his time in the family workshop, guiding the hands of younger generations and continuing to develop his craft. With Giacomo’s artistic oversight, the family’s extensive experience and the brand’s high quality.
