This beautiful Brown Stoneware Coffee Cup Set is handmade by skilled potters in Tintorero, Venezuela. Tintorero is a small town famous for its craft traditions, which local artisans have passed down through generations. This set, made from local materials, is evidence of the survival of a rich local tradition that has weathered time and history. Typical of the region, this style of cup embodies the natural warmth of the earth from which it was created.

Don Juan Evangelista and his wife, Juana Paolo Montes, formalized Tintorero’s craft when they established a pioneering workshop. Located at the foot of a mound known as El Ermitaño (The Hermit), their workshop initially focused on weaving. As such, they continued the rich indigenous history of weaving practices, which date back beyond recorded history, and adapted them to modern times. As time passed, this workshop became the biggest in the area and gained fame for the quality of its pieces.

Eventually, the aging couple passed the operation over to Sixto Sarmiento, who was a skilled loom operator and passionate protector of the tradition. During the 20th century, Sixto was responsible for maintaining production and expanding the workshop. He began producing wood carvings, local ‘criollo’ sweets, jewelry and, of course, ceramics. Sixto employed skilled artisans for each of these distinct crafts, ensuring that the products were authentic and truly traditional. Today, the workshop’s products are famed throughout Venezuela.

The story behind Familia Gonzalez Rincon is the story of Venezuelan crafts. Colonizers often learned and adapted indigenous practices. They then collaboratively developed them through the years. As a result, the country boasts a rich variety of truly unique crafts like this Brown Stoneware Coffee Cup Set. Each practice is localized and tells stories of cultural interactions, surrounding landscapes, technological influences and developing tastes. Taken as a whole, this body of work forms the complex, beautiful whole that is contemporary Venezuelan identity.
