GEOMETRIC VASE II

Qty

$1,520.00

This stoneware vase is formed using the traditional method of stacking hand-rolled bands of clay into a cylinder, before shaping with rounded stones, scrapers made from gourds and other found objects. The finish of the piece recalls the Latin American mid-twentieth century fascination with geometric patterns and organic colors, providing a touch of retro class in the timeless form of a contemporary design.

The interior of the piece is finished in a glossy, non-porous obsidian glaze, making it ideal to hold cut flowers.

Description

Reynolds’ work melds influences from his native Venezuela with those found around his South London studio. His use of smoothed stones and a scraper fashioned from gourd follows in the footsteps of traditional potters in rural Venezuela, where such methods have long been practiced.

The geometrical decoration of Reynolds’ work is likewise inspired by his love for mid-twentieth century Latin American design, which is reimagined and repurposed in his contemporaneous pieces. The finishes are scored onto the clay when it is ‘leather hard’ and pigmented with colored slip, a form of liquid clay. Glazing is only applied to the inside of the pieces, to ensure that they retain liquid, whilst the outside is left with a rough, grainy texture. This matte surface speaks of the haptic production process of the pieces, with each example being a unique expression of the artist.
