SUNBURST WALL MIRROR (Large)
This decorative piece was made of compressed wood and it was manually covered with gold, which is a technique that has survived for 500 years. This object reflects the strength of the sun and how the Mexican traditions remain in it.
This golden sun-shaped wall mirror reflects the workshop of the Silva family, who maintain their “ATZLÁN” factory since the 1950s in Mexico City, where they perpetuate a family tradition they have inherited for generations: carving wood and covering it with gold foil. This piece is made from the experience and history of a family that refuses to leave a very old tradition to disappear. The work with gold leaf reminds the times of the Colony and has survived since then, more than 500 years later. At that time, gold plates were used to decorate chapels, churches, and saints, but over the years it began to cover decorative objects such as these mirrors in the form of the sun and the famous “portholes”. The sun for the Mexican was the god Tonatiuh, and although this piece has nothing to do with the cosmogony of the ancients, the strength of the sun and Mexican traditions remains in it: it is pure brilliance and beauty.
